Enhancing your child’s football skills at home can be both enjoyable and effective with the right drills. Here are some fun exercises designed to improve various aspects of their game:
1. Hex Jumps
Purpose: To improve footwork, reaction time, and agility.
How to Perform:
- Using tape or chalk, create a hexagon with all six sides measuring 1 foot each.
- The player starts inside the hexagon.
- From an athletic stance, the player jumps over the front line and immediately back into the center.
- They then jump diagonally over the top right line and back to the center.
- Continue this pattern clockwise around the hexagon, then reverse direction.
- Perform for 45 seconds, rest for 30 seconds, and repeat.
Coaching Tips:
- For an added challenge, try the drill on one leg, then switch to the other.

2. Jump Cut Drill
Purpose: To work on footwork, balance, acceleration, and deceleration.
How to Perform:
- Set up at least four cones: one as a starting point and another 5 yards ahead.
- Place a cone 1 yard to the right and left of the second cone, forming a “T” shape.
- The player accelerates from the first cone to the second.
- At the second cone, they perform a lateral jump cut to the left or right, then accelerate forward for 5 yards.
- Repeat the drill, alternating directions.
Coaching Tips:
- When cutting to the right, plant the left foot firmly and explode laterally, keeping hips and shoulders facing forward.
- Always hold the ball in the outside hand.
- As proficiency increases, extend the acceleration zone to 7-10 yards and widen the jump cut zones.

3. Shuffle and Switch
Purpose: To improve ball security and maintain a low center of gravity with squared shoulders.
How to Perform:
- Lay down 4-6 agility bags or pool noodles, spaced 2-3 yards apart.
- Starting at one end with a football, the player accelerates toward the first obstacle, performs a move, and jump cuts to the left.
- They then shuffle across the face of the obstacle, keeping shoulders square.
- At the end of each obstacle, the player explodes forward, cuts back inside, and switches the ball to the outside hand.
- Continue this pattern through all obstacles, then sprint forward for an additional 5-10 yards.
Coaching Tips:
- To increase difficulty, have a partner with a blocking bag provide token resistance before the final sprint.

4. X Drill
Purpose: To enhance agility, balance, and recovery after a stumble.
How to Perform:
- Set up four flat agility bags, pool noodles, or similar objects in an “X” pattern on the ground.
- Place two more obstacles 3-4 yards away from the “X” and a partner, stand-up dummy, or any obstacle 3-4 yards beyond the last flat bag.
- The player starts with a football in hand and their free hand down in the middle of the “X”.
- They navigate through the “X” pattern, maintaining control and balance, then proceed to the additional obstacles, executing appropriate moves to evade or engage as directed.
Coaching Tips:
- Players can finish with a juke, stiff arm, or any move they prefer.
- If a partner is available, they can act as a defender, requiring the runner to react and choose a direction.

5. Pocket Presence Drill
Purpose: To improve movement and footwork in the pocket while keeping eyes downfield.
How to Perform:
- Place two hula hoops 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage and 2 yards apart.
- If training alone, set up two targets (e.g., garbage cans) 10-15 yards downfield on either side to simulate receivers.
- The player starts at the line of scrimmage with the ball, takes a five-step drop, passing between the hula hoops.
- They plant their feet, hitch up to avoid an outside pass rush, then shuffle back to the center of the pocket.
- Once back in the pocket, the player locates their target and makes a strong, accurate throw.
Coaching Tips:
- If a partner is available, they can signal which side the pass rush is coming from or act as the receiver.
